Lawrence’s Trumpet Faux Pas
Written by Lawrence Hill

One night when I was young, I was getting ready practice on my horn. I placed the instrument to my lips and blew… and no sound came out. I tried again and again until I was turning blew, but neither sound nor air were coming through it all.

I checked the valve placement and verified that they were fine, so I held the trumpet bell to the light and saw that something was lodged inside the bell pipe, so I attempted with any success to get it out with my snake so I told Mom my problem.

My Mom examined the horn and saw the tiny marble inside the bell and had an idea on how to fix it.
We both got into the old 1969 Mercury and drove. I had question marks coming out of my head, trying to figure out what she was going to do. I was thinking “what music store would be open that late at night?” when we stopped at local car repair shop which puzzled me even more. After all, we were trying to repair a trumpet, not a car.

My mom calmly explained the situation to the bemused mechanic who was on duty at the time. He then asked for the horn and hooked it up to a high powered air hose and pulled the trigger. The offending marble sped out of the bell faster than I could see and was pulverized against the concrete floor.

The moral of the story: Mom's are resourceful! 'Nuff said!
